dalla Nota della traduttrice Cristina Viti
from Translator’s Note (Cristina Viti)
And so we find in these pages the body voyaging from death to life, a return journey towards a carnality understood with full awareness. Starting from the impossibile image of the skeletons of a man and a woman who during their lives have carved inscriptions into their own bones (signifying not sterile self-absorption but the acute awareness that every experience deeply marks bodily structure), we come face to face with a body living through various states: a body rebelling against itself, broken down into warring systems and tissues, sworn to self-destruction; but also a body of light, infused with love & compassion & thus able to restore the world, a body playing with its own form & shamanically dreaming itself free of male & female valency, finding the key to the integrity of the self in the voice & its song.
Colonna vertebrale. reperto n° 9
In noi, s’impernia Galla Placidia, mosaico
rimembrano l’origine animale dell’umana natura
in voi, domandatevi se sareste disposti all’adulterio
posso dare all’altro quel ch’è serbato a me
ecco, cosa è realtà cosa sogno
cosa è la spina dello stare
che dolce s’incunea
nel non dire
Spinal Column. finding no. 9
Inside us, Galla Placidia pivots, a mosaic
of cells loosened from the rainbow
inside us, Joan of Arc is raging, at the head
of righteous, close-ranked & apocalyptic
women burnt alive for the witchcraft of their butchers
inside us, time has sucked the marrow of the world
to turn it into St Patrick’s genius well
inside us the revolving stairway of endless wisdom turns,
the column rests: the rattlesnake hungering for peoples
ancient & modern that she gobbles like burgers & fries
inside us are hard-tail relics that warn us underneath,
remembering the animal origin of human nature
the four-legged instinct for survival, for fight
inside us, the righteous position is consciousness, we’ve
ways of the pack leader, the forefather, the forcings
of sun-mantled pharaoh, of scratches & love
inside us, love feeds on eternal madness, the pathos
the electricity howling inside our vertebrate hollow
can light up razed-down cities, turn gloom into Las Vegas,
inside you, ask yourselves would you spike your heart
on a spit for him, dip your tongue in poison for her
inside you, ask yourselves would you be game for adultery
even knowing that Malatesta’s already sizing you up
ask yourselves are you the acting authors in your own film!
there, now I can feel you as superior, sacred, now that barebone
scraped, Franciscan, I can also not manifest your might
I can be food & sharing guest at the last supper
I can also not belong to any sex or sample
give to the other what’s been kept for me
there, what is reality what dream
what is the spine of abiding
wedging itself gently
into not-telling
Costato. reperto n° 10
Scardina il fianco scoperchia me spurio
estirpa me e aspira il respiratorio poi l’endocrino
nervoso digerente circolatorio l’escretore
dissolvi me il riproduttore di ritratti a me somiglianti
cinti come voglio in vita vivere coi tuoi apparati
Ribcage. finding no. 10
Unhinge the hip unlid me the spurious
oratory sarcophagus of seven layers
of tegument desiccated so as to host
you my Nefertiti holding treasure in every breath
extirpate me inhale respiratory endocrine
nervous digestive circulatory excretory
dissolve me the reproducer of portraits resembling me
debone my ivory mover now that still alive
you englobe & skin yourself whole & wire to my canons
your circuits waisted the way & how I want
to live in life with your systems
when we bandage ourselves not with ribs or rags
but with embraces forefelt as immortal
Knees With No Ligaments Left. finding no. 13
Now he’ll incarnate as Trasimeno make an oar of his own femur, of
his patella a stone alerting me to that desire of his
of his tibia a flute allowing us telecommunication
of his fibula the anchor splitting my heart like a lance
Agilla, lake-limbed nymph, I plunge down, lay myself down in the lakebed
of your womb like a child like a sinking suicidal vessel. You fit
like a figurehead to my body‘s prow but since then my peers’ve been calling
I peer up, sight legs, & speak to you as a sailor far from home

Sulle punte quasi stessi rincasando

Since I’ve been woman I’ve been bleeding the years
blazing the trail washing his feet with my hair
& with pins no longer under my heel but as butterfly
I spread my wings & back well-come you into a showcase of thorns
crucified to tell you the measure of one mother-heartbeat
how much a mother dies of heartbreak for any child
how being mother is a sentence drenched in eternity
On tiptoe almost as if I’m coming home
late, I’m dancing one breath away from heaven & earth
so as not to exist at least for a fraction
in man or woman form but as I am
on tiptoe almost as if I’m coming home

Your joy is my acupuncture, simulate
the same shoe size, joined feet rendering the creasing
of not being the step I am, less hard & slow to sink.
Understudying each other not understanding
who is sun who reflection it seems good to drown
I feel like sea embracing sea mirror of the universe only when
I dry your tears with my bread
Nuca. contatto n° 31
quel folle brancolare nell’abbaglio
Nape. contact no. 31
A mother leaning crooked over the budgie
is vaster than a marriage a god
her hand is a smooth step roaming
the nape & roughing out caresses in the skull
discovering angles in the hair, urgencies
stunted – mouth-fed in the dark, brayings,
that mad groping in the daze
bumping statue & sculptor in the scale –
the mother over the child …. how they no longer
talk to each other by common pits
My father’s forehead is eight hours long
it has no hair around it but bristling women
in mourning, between his eyes is a basket where
you can place kisses wrapped up for too many years.
My father’s forehead is a plain in the sun
but otherwise he is like us: unfinished
rough-hewn grief, for this I beg you
now father, let your father be me
the hand under the nape, let it be mine
let it, dead father, let yourself be my child
